So Cliodhna mentioned in another thread that we're better off giving CSC a specific wishlist than an amount of money. We should build up and whittle down a list at the meeting, this is more for my and anyone else's thoughts to be gathered.
C+P from IRC:
yan> Hey guys so you know how I'm in the Alternative Music Society in college? We're asking for money to start a CD library, and we've been told it's better to have a specific wishlist than just ask for money
<yan> So we're each going to bring a list of 10ish essential albums to the next meeting and work out what to ask for
<yan> what do you think?
<MFbrenDOOM> 10ish is not a lot.
<MFbrenDOOM> What genres are you looking for?
<yan> We're going to add them together
<Francisco> 10ish each is a lot
<yan> any genres
<MFbrenDOOM> One album per genre?
<MFbrenDOOM> That might work.
<MFbrenDOOM> Hard as hell, but nevertheless, it might work.
<Quiroz> Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music
<yan> Well more help me think of 10 albums I think we should definitely have, but that wouldn't be a bad ida
<Francisco> Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
<Quiroz> Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
<Francisco> Naked City - Naked City
<MFbrenDOOM> Hecq - Night Falls for ambient, then.
<yan> I'm thinking In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Repeater, Funeral, Loveless, off the top of my head...
<MFbrenDOOM> Loveless is a great choice.
<MFbrenDOOM> Funeral is great, better than Neon Bible.
<Francisco> I haven't heard Funeral since the hype Arcade fire got
<yan> But I won't actually put it on my list, because Jamie will put it on his. Twice.
<Quiroz> Zen Arcade
<Francisco> which was what? 3 years ago?
<MFbrenDOOM> Not sure about Aeroplane.
<MFbrenDOOM> Sucks IMO.
<MFbrenDOOM> but whatever.
<yan> pssshhhh
<yan> it is awesome
<yan> Oh, Alopecia
<Quiroz> definitely Zen Arcade
<yan> and totally Zen Arcade
<Francisco> Red?
<Quiroz> The Shape of Punk To Come
<MFbrenDOOM> Have Heart - The Things We Carry for hardcore.
<Quiroz> The Shape of Jazz To Come
<Quiroz> Kind of Blue
<Quiroz> or Birth of the Cool
<MFbrenDOOM> The Shape of Punk to Come is a monumentally great album in hardcore, but I think there are better choices for that genre.
<Francisco> kind of blue.
<MFbrenDOOM> Kind of Blue for sure, for jazz.
<Luke> cap'n jazz - Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over
<PJ> MFbrenDOOM haha glad you agree with me about Aeroplane
<Francisco> or A Love Supreme
<PJ> luke could you upload that?
<PJ> i haven't been able to find it
<Quiroz> Mingus Ah Um
<PJ> just... don't include the full title or it will corrupt the files
<Luke> i dont have it, it's on their compilation thoguh
Luke> analphabetapothology

And other thoughts: Doolittle, Wonderful Rainbow, Minor Threat Discography, Bad Brains s/t, More Heart Than Brains, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, F#A#Infinity, 36 Chambers, Absence, The Flying Club Cup...

I recognise so few of those that i should probably be asked to leave the society ._.

As much as I love jazz, is it really appropriate for the alternative music society?

Given that there's a Jazz society anyway, no.  If there wasn't, I'd say some token gesture towards the genre at least, but... I'm not sure why they recommended so much.

We came up with a list of 20 albums at the meeting. Apparently they said they'd give us around €100, but we figured we'd be ambitious.

To show that they know more about music than you. Although they went with a lot of entry level jazz so they fail in my eyes.

Oooh, sick burn.

I think an amount of entry-levelness is appropriate though, at least to get things started.

I have quite a lot of promo CDs from reviewing for various different people, I could donate a stack if you wanted to flesh out the library? They're mostly just cardboard sleeves etc, but it's all fairly recent stuff. I'll try drop in on Thursday with some stuff if you want it.

Deadly! Muchos gracias. The bigger our library of not-so-great stuff, the bigger the library, the more we get to make the library full of great stuff. Can you post up the list, Conor?

+1 to buying the stuff from Road.

As much as I was initially enthusiastic about this, it might be best if we buy from the internet, to maximise our purchasing power.

We should check 'em out anyway, if they've a few albums on the list going for >10e, that's about as cheap as we'd get them online anyway.
But if not then yay internets.

That makes sense!
Though if they give us our wishlist and not a specific amount of money, we should buy as much as they have from them.

When we get sorted in terms of money vs. wishlist, or in the (hopefully) near future when we decide to build up the independent Irish bands, then we can go Road all the way.
But yay Play.com and/or Amazon. We should make sure to look at the American version of the latter too. More postage, i know, but with exchange rates right now, prices are quite good.

Also, has anyone seen Donncha? Cause he'll need the wishlist for when he's getting us a shiny grant.

That's a minefield of a game, nothing is as it seems.

1:  In An Aeroplane over the Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel) - Yan
2:  OK Computer (Radiohead)- Maybe a sort of unanimous "we should probably include radiohead" or maybe Helena or Jimmy if he was there
3:  Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins) - no idea... Conor?
4:  Loveless (My Bloody Valentine) - Jamie
5:  Low (David Bowie) - Other Conor/Cliodhna
6:  Daydream Nation (Sonic Youth) - Michael
7:  Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles) - Yan? This one's not fair
8:  The Velvet Underground and Nico (The Velvet Underground) - Other Conor
10: Sound of Silver (LCD Soundsystem) - Jamie... though I'm guessing I'm wrong on this one.
11: Dresden Dolls (The Dresden Dolls) - Conor
12: Strangeways, Here We Come (The Smiths) - I'm thinking Jamie, purely because you chose this over The Queen is Dead. But then again, you did say you only had the best of.
13: Songs of Love and Hate (Leonard Cohen)- Yan
14: The Downward Spiral (Nine Inch Nails) - Other Conor/Helena/Jimmy/Donncha?
15: Modern Life Is Rubbish (Blur) - Cliodhna
16: Disintegration (The Cure) - Cliodhna?
17: Pink Moon (Nick Drake) - Jamie?
18: Fear of Music (Talking Heads) - Michael
19: Ágætis byrjun (Sigur Rós) - Other Conor?
20: Cell-Scape (Melt-Banana) - Jamie

As you can see I clearly think that Jamie exerted his influence as chairperson a little too much. Also it just struck me that I know nothing about Donnacha's musical taste. Fun game.

3:  Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins) - no idea... Conor?
4:  Loveless (My Bloody Valentine) - Jamie More unanimous, I think
5:  Low (David Bowie) - Other Conor/Cliodhna
6:  Daydream Nation (Sonic Youth) - MichaelProbably

12: Strangeways, Here We Come (The Smiths) - I'm thinking Jamie, purely because you chose this over The Queen is Dead. But then again, you did say you only had the best of.I think The Smiths was a collective decision, and probably the album was also collectively chosen
13: Songs of Love and Hate (Leonard Cohen)- Yanand Other Conor, but Leonard Cohen was widely accepted, we just picked the album
14: The Downward Spiral (Nine Inch Nails) - Other Conor/Helena/Jimmy/Donncha?
15: Modern Life Is Rubbish (Blur) - Cliodhna
16: Disintegration (The Cure) - Cliodhna?

The rest I'm not sure about.

Hey, didn't I get Fugazi included when we expanded the list? Oh well.
